FAQ

IS THIS TREK FOR ME?

Firstly, you are incredibly strong and capable of achieving anything you set your mind to, including this trek. Trust in yourself and your abilities. You have so much time to prepare and train. Remember training does NOT need to be hard, just consistent.

The trail is challenging, with almost 10,000 meters of steep ascents and descents, rocky sections, and high mountain passes. What people are not prepared for on this trek is the amount of elevation gain and loss each day. You should be prepared to hike on average around 13 kilometres and 750 meters of elevation and descent daily for nine consecutive days.

The Tour du Mont Blanc Trek is well suited to fit hillwalkers, capable of trekking for multiple days in a row carrying a light (5-8kg) rucksack. We follow footpaths each day and the terrain is hilly and can be uneven.

It requires good physical fitness, endurance, and hiking experience. The Tour du Mont Blanc does not require technical climbing skills but good fitness, stamina, and hiking experience. If you are looking to take your next step on your hiking journey, are keen for a challenge or are looking to hike your first long distance trail then this is the perfect choice for those in search of an unforgettable and once in a lifetime trek.

*Something to note:This trek is not suitable for those with a fear of heights or beginners or those new to hiking. A good baseline of fitness is needed.

WHAT TRAINING IS REQUIRED?

For any adventure holiday, physical preparation is crucial for a successful and enjoyable experience. If you are an experienced hiker who regularly goes on multi-day hikes and hikes weekly or bi-weekly, you are likely to already have a good foundation for a hut-to-hut trek. However, if you are not used to hiking, it is crucial to start training in advance. Giving yourself a good training block of 4-6 months should be enough time to feel happy in your ability and confident on the trail. If you are looking for a suitable program, we recommend the 5 or 6 month Solo Training Program from Mountaineering_coach_kate She specialises in mountaineering and trekking training for women.

Remember training does NOT need to be hard, just consistent.

You should involve regular, shorter hikes to improve your endurance and speed include a 5-8 kilo weighted backpack. Ideally the backpack you intended to hike with on the trip. These hikes can be local and familiar to you. Gradually increase distance and elevation gain to force your body into making the necessary adaptations. Eventually, try incorporating two-day hikes into your training. They adequately simulate the demands of a hut-to-hut tour. Luckily we will be hosting a training weekend in early spring in Wicklow that will simulate what you can expect to experience on the trail. This will give you a great indication of where you are at with your ability and make any adjustments to your training if needs be.

WHERE IS THE TRAINING WEEKEND?

Your training weekend will run on a weekend and hosted by GGW’s Founder Mel and your GGW Host in Lynams Hotel in Laragh Wicklow. There will be a 2 hour informal information session and Q&A. We will discuss training, gear, itinerary, flights and answer any questions you may have. Tea & coffee included.

After the information session we will head out on a 5-6 hour hike in the Wicklow mountains. The following day we will meet at a location for another 4-5 hour hike.

HOW HEAVY WILL MY BACKPACK BE?

We recommend a backpack between 30-35 litres 5-8 kilo pack but it all depends on how you like to pack and what you like to bring. It should be large enough to carry all your equipment but light enough to keep the weight down. As you are staying in huts you are not required to bring any sleeping equipment. Your backpack will include clothing for the trip, snacks, your lunch for the day, water, first aid kit, trekking poles, medication etc

ARE DIETARY REQUIREMENT CATERED FOR?

The huts try their best to cater meals for all dietary requirements. This is why its important to let us know of any dietary requirements at the time of booking. Some huts are in remote places, therefore access to ingredients may be challenging. For snacks, we suggest packing additional snacks, as vegan, gluten free etc snacks may be hard to come by in the huts.

WHAT INSURANCE DO I NEED?

Let’s face it, these types of trips don’t come risk free. We’re putting ourselves in amazing environments but also environments that carry an element of risk with them. In order to protect yourself adequately you will need a specialist travel insurance that caters for the types of activities you will be undertaking. It is a condition of our agreement that you are covered by adequate travel insurance for your arrangements.

GGW Terms and Conditions

  1. For group holidays the price per person given at the time of booking is based on a particular number of participants. If the minimum group size changes at any time prior to departure (including where confirmed participants cancel without being substituted and pay less than 100% cancellation charges) we reserve the right to re-cost the trip per person. Any increase in the price will be payable by the remaining participants. The increase will not be a surcharge and accordingly will not be subject to the surcharge provision set out in this clause. We can usually fill all cancelled spots so this will hopefully not adjust the cost of your trip.

  2. While we try and stick to the tried and tested itinerary below, the mountain and the weather sometimes has other ideas. We will always remain as flexible as possible, which is why we only work with experienced and knowledgeable guides, to make sure we can change any plans if required. This is a proposed itinerary and where you stay is subject to change based on how far in advance you book your trip.

  3. If you have had to cancel your booking due to experiencing symptoms of Covid-19 you are not entitled to a refund, exchange or transfer.

Whilst we will endeavour to assist, we cannot guarantee we will be able to meet any such request. Where we can, an amendment fee of £100 per amendment will be payable together with any costs or charges incurred or imposed by any of our suppliers. A change of tour dates will normally be treated as a cancellation of the original booking and rebooking in which case cancellation charges will apply. Changes may result in the recalculation of the tour price where, for example, the basis on which the price of the original tour was calculated has changed.

  4. You may transfer your booking or your place on the booking to someone else (introduced by you) without payment of our cancellation charges providing the request for the transfer is made in writing not less than 7 days before departure. The person(s) to whom you wish to make the transfer must also satisfy all conditions which form part of your contract with us. Requests for transfer must be accompanied by the name and other applicable details of the replacement person(s). If you are unwilling to travel for any reason, or you are unable to travel due to medical reasons, cancellation charges will apply.

We will ask you to pay cancellation charges on the scale shown below based on your original booking departure date. In calculating these cancellation charges, we have taken account of possible cost savings and the generation of income from other bookings which may be able to utilise cancelled services to the extent this is likely to be achievable. Cancellation charges are calculated on the basis of the total cost payable by the person(s) cancelling, excluding insurance premiums and any amendment charges (which are not refundable in the event of cancellation).

Period before departure within which written Cancellation charge per notification of cancellation is received by us person cancelling

105 days or more before departure Loss of deposit

Where any cancellation reduces the number of full paying participants below the number on which the price and/or any concessions agreed for your booking were based, we will recalculate these items and re-invoice you accordingly.

In calculating these cancellation charges, we have taken account of possible cost savings and the generation of income from other bookings which may be able to utilise cancelled services to the extent this is likely to be achievable. The route crosses three borders (France, Italy and Switzerland), climbs over six passes, traverses beneath huge glaciers, and meanders through beautiful alpine meadows and picture-book villages. That's right, this is a truly memorable journey and one of worlds classic long-distance hiking routes.

DETAILS

Date: 6th- 16th July 2026

Availability: Limited to 8 spots. Early booking is recommended

It is a condition of our agreement that you are covered by adequate travel insurance for your arrangements.
